Box Score Exciting Women's Soccer Matchup Goes Way of Captains
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Christopher Newport University's Victoria Perry scored in the first minute of the contest and in overtime to hand a 2-1 loss to the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team Wednesday night.
Perry found an early opening in the last line of the Marlins' defense, getting around goalkeeper Alexis Wheeler to rip a shot at the goal. VWC's Alexia Vassiliadis was able to slide in front of the goal to clear the ball out, but Perry followed up her attempt for the initial score just 27 seconds into play.
The Marlins locked down on the Captains from that point on, knotting the score at the 26 minute mark when Annie Hartman scored off a deflection by keeper Haley Casanova.
The two squad battled through a scoreless second half as Wheeler and Casanova each made a save.
Virginia Wesleyan had a great chance to start the overtime period as Casanova was caught out of position. Kaitlyn Clunan took a shot from the left side, just outside the box, but due to the tight angle her shot just skimmed past the right goal post.
Perry finished the game one minute later on a break away around the defense, getting her shot to the back of the net.
Casanova made four saves for Christopher Newport (5-0-1) as Wheeler made four stops for the Marlins.
Christopher Newport held minimal edges in shots (12-10) and corner kicks (3-2).
Virginia Wesleyan (2-5) travels to Hollins University Saturday for the Marlins' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener. First kick is scheduled for 2 p.m.
