Clunan Goal Lifts Marlins past Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior forward Kaitlyn Clunan scored just eight minutes into the contest as the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team defeated Methodist University 1-0 in the final day of the Captains Classic.

The Marlins had some great opportunities early in the game that did not go the way of VWC before breaking through for the match's only score as Madison Atkins found Clunan with a pass to the right side.

Methodist had several good scoring chances as well, but several just went high as another shot by Carpi Clarke hit the crossbar early in the second half.

Goalie Alexis Wheeler collected her first shutout with three saves for the Marlins. Taylor Ross had four saves for Methodist (2-2).

The Marlins held a 19-13 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-4) will host Christopher Newport University Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
