Men's Tennis Competes in CNU Fall Kickoff

The Virginia Wesleyan College men's tennis team took to the courts for the first time in the 2015-16 season this past weekend at Chistopher Newport University for their Fall Kickoff Tournament. 

The event included CNU, VWC, Methodist University, and Division II Chowan University.  Coming into the season-opening event CNU was ranked #9 in the South Atlantic region followed by Methodist at #19.  Both VWC and Chowan are not currently ranked.

In the #1 singles flight, senior Graham Wilson went 1-1 which included a 6-1, 6-2 win over CNU's Steven Boslet.  Drew Tomajczyk captured the other singles win for the Marlins when he defeated Tristan Martin 6-2, 6-3 from Chowan in the #4 flight.  Singles against Methodist was cancelled due to the tournament being delayed by Saturday's rain.

In doubles, the Marlins finished the event with a 7-5 record for the weekend, splitting with both CNU and Methodist and taking three of four doubles positions against Division II Chowan.  The teams of Tomajczyk/Brenden Kelleher and Tyler Chang/Tyler Searcy each finished the tournament 3-0 at #3 and #4 doubles respectively.

"Although we've had some solid team practices so far this fall, it was important for us to see how we handle competitive DIII competition.  This weekend and next will help us see where we're at both mentally and emotionally regarding how we compete and handle adversity; hopefully the experience will help make clear where we need to improve as a team." said first year coach Marty Perry.

VWC's men's tennis team will be back at CNU next weekend another mock dual event.  Joining CNU and VWC for the event will be Longwood University and Norfolk State.  Play will begin at 10am on Saturday and will continue through the weekend.
