Marlins Strike First, Outlasted 5-1 by No. 3 Messiah
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. --- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead on No. 3 Messiah College, but was outlasted 5-1 in non-conference action Tuesday night.
Freshman Julia Downing got the scoring started at the 18:29 mark off an assist from junior Brittany Wentzel.
Messiah connected for two scores before the half ended as Holly Burgard and Ally Reinhardt found the back of the net. The Falcons continued to attack throughout the second half as Nikki Elsaesser and Kyele Bridel scored while Burgard posted her second goal of the match.
Freshman goalie Alexis Wheeler produced a stoic effort in net with eight saves. Audra Larson made one save for Messiah (1-0).
Messiah held the advantage in shots while also maintaining a 9-2 margin in corner kicks.
The Marlins (0-1) will take on Berry University in the Atlantic Orthopedic Specialist Classic at 6:00 p.m on Friday at the Trinder Center.
