Virginia Wesleyan falls in ODAC title match to Washington and Lee

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Drew Tomajczyk and Brendan Kelleher high-fived at the net as a vocal crowd acknowledged their consistent play in posting a thrilling 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles in the early stages of Sunday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship match against Washington and Lee University at the Everett Tennis Center.

Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/home schooled) and Kelleher (Baltimore, Md./Towson) provided the only point Virginia Wesleyan would record however, as the Generals took a 2-1 lead after doubles and produced the singles wins necssary to close out a 5-1 victory for the program's 34th ODAC championship.

Tomajczyk, a junior, and Kelleher, a sophomore, finished the season with a 7-0 record as a doubles team, including a 6-0 mark at the No. 3 slot.  The duo jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Generals' Joe Siami (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) and Ethan Markman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and extended it to a 5-1 advantage.  WLU came back strong with a 4-1 run to pull within a 6-5 score, but the Marlin pair scored two of the final three points to take the win.

The match was part of highly competitive doubles play on all three courts. The Generals never trailed, but could not pull away either.  Jordan Krasner (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and Will Bannister (Bath, England/Beechen Cliff School) were on the verge of wrapping things up at No. 2 with a 7-3 lead, but Tyler Chang (Havre de Grace, Md./Tome School) and Kenneth Downing (Washington, D.C./home schooled) battled back with a pair of points close it to 7-5.

Krasner finished first in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2, and Michael Holt and Markman followed with 6-1, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively, to close out the win.

Virginia Wesleyan, which played in the ODAC title game for the second year in a row, finishes its season with a 14-5 record.  Washington and Lee improves to 15-8 and will compete in the NCAA Division III championship later this month.
