Proctor leads VWC women with win at No. 1 at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's men's tennis team swept doubles for the sixth time this season as the Marlins rolled to an 8-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the host Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College on Thursday.

While the Marlin men notched the overall match victory for a seventh straight time to improve to 8-3 overall and to 6-1 in the ODAC, the Virginia Wesleyan women dropped an 8-1 decision to the Jackets and fell to 2-6 overall and to 1-6 in the league. Junior Mia Proctor (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) defeated Angelina Sportelli (Mechanicsville/Lee-Davis) at the No. 1 flight to provide the VWC women with their sole victory.

Virginia Wesleyan dominated in the men's competition however, setting the tone of the match with a 3-0 sweep in doubles, highlighted by an impressive 8-0 win by junior Graham Wilson (Newport News/Menchville) and sophomore Kenny Downing (Washington, D.C./Home schooled)at No. 1 over Ryan Byrd (Toano/Warhill) and Ira Usry (Columbia, S.C/Hammond).

Junior Drew Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/Home schooled) and rookie Adam Rosemblaum (Herzelya, Israel) outlasted John Adam (Vienna/James Madison) and Connor Hoerr (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) for a thrilling 9-7 in at No. 2, and sophomore Brendan Kelleher (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and junior Tyler Chang (Hvre de Grace, Md./Tome School)won 8-1 over Alex Curnow (Culpeper/Midlothian) and Tom Lewis (Charlottesville/Western Albemarle) at No. 3. It was the first win as a duo for Kelleher and Chang, who improved to 7-0 and 8-2 in doubles overall, respectively.

Virginia Wesleyan's five singles victories were all straight-set decisions, including Rosemblaum's 6-1, 6-1 victory over Usry at No. 4.  Rosemblaum improved to 7-2 overall, Wilson improved to 7-4 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and Kelleher remained undefeated and improved to 8-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 5.

The Marlins return to competition on Friday, April 3, hosting the Division I Hawks of University of Maryland-Eastern Shore at 4 p.m. at the Everett Tennis Center.
