VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's tennis team took the early lead over Shenandoah University at the Everett Tennis Center, but could not make it stick.
Shenandoah overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles competition to win four singles matches to eke out a 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.
Junior Mia Proctor (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and rookie Jackie Lee (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) posted an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, knocking off the Hornets' Molly Barb (Edinburg/Woodstock Central) and Shannon Allin (Burke/Lake Braddock). Sophomore Marisa Cifuentes (Virginia Beach/Bayside) and rookie Kristen Walden (Suffolk/Lakeland) had to work a little harder to pick up the win at No. 2 over Amber Lake (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) and Jeannella Williams (Trenton, N.J./Trenton), but emerged with an 8-6 decision.
Proctor and Lee were the only Marlins to win in singles, however. Proctor won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 over Barb, and Lee won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 over Williams. Shenandoah won the other four flights in straight set decisions.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Tuesday, March 10, hosting Penn State Abingdon in non-conference play at 2 p.m.
