Marlins bounce Roanoke for fifth straight victory

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Competition against Roanoke College's Maroons resulted in a split for the Virginia Wesleyan College men's and women's tennis teams at the Center Court Racquet Club.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference matches were moved indoors due to the inclement weather, and the change of venue did not stop the VWC men.  The Marlins won their fifth straight match, posting a 7-0 win over the Maroons (5-4).  Roanoke took home one win however, recording a 5-0 decision in the women's competition.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-3, 4-1), ranked No. 17 in the Atlantic South region, took control of the match with a sweep in doubles.  While Graham Wilson (Newport News/Menchville) and Kenny Downing (Washington, D.C./Home schooled) won 8-4 at No. 1 and Adam Rosemblaum (Herzelya, Israel) andTyler Chang (Hvre de Grace, Md./Tome School) won 8-6 at No. 2, Drew Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/Home schooled) and Brendan Kelleher (Baltimore, Md./Towson) rolled to an 8-0 decision at No. 3.

Wilson, Downing, Tomajczyk, and Rosemblaum were all singles winners as well.  Rosemblaum defeated Matt Del Grecco (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 flight, while the other three Marlin victories were three-set decisions.

Roanoke's victory in the women's competition followed a similar pattern, as the Maroons swept doubles and did not lose a set in singles.  Roanoke improved to 10-4 overall and to 5-1 in the league, while VWC dropped to 2-4 overall and to 1-4 in the ODAC.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Sunday, March 29, at Guilford College in another ODAC match.
