Box Score No. 4 Marlins Drop Semifinal Bout with No. 1 Hornets 4-0
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The No. 1 seed Lynchburg College women's soccer team scored a pair of first half goals and added two more in the final period to down No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan 4-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinal action.
The early minutes looked like it could be similar to the defensive contest from the regular season as only two shots were taken during the first 20 minutes, both by the Marlins.
VWC ran into some bad luck in the 21st minute as Jade Woll found Marina Clark on a cross for a 1-0 Hornet lead, scoring on their first shot of the match.
The Marlin defensive, led by goalkeeper Megan Gerhart, continued to hold despite a strong offensive presence by the Hornets. Morgan Singer got a pair of shots off with LC clinging to a 1-0 edge, but Gerhart saved both chances. The second save set up the Hornets with another scoring chance less than two minutes later that they would capitalize on as Woll crossed the ball into the box again. This time the pass found Caitlin Mertens for the 2-0 lead.
Singer provided the insurance tallies for the Hornets early in the second half as the Hornets led 4-0 in the 57th minute off a pair of goals from the senior forward.
Gerhart finished with four saves for the Marlins. Lynchburg (19-2-1) outshot the Marlins 15-3 with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan ends the year with a 11-10 overall record and an 8-3 mark in league play.
No. 1 Lynchburg will face the winner of No. 2 Shenandoah University and No. 6 Roanoke College in Sunday's ODAC Championship.
