Box Score Marlins Late Rally Falls Short against Sewanee
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team scored twice in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the three-goal deficit in Tuesday's 4-3 non-conference loss to Sewanee.
Sewanee jumped out strong early as Emma Horgan found Catherine Estes for a score just 2:46 into Tuesday's action.
The Marlins evened the score at 14:36 when Asiah Allen found Ashley Parker for her team-leading fourth goal of the year.
The Tigers posted the final two tallies on goals by Devon Davis and Horgan to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the half.
VWC continued to fight Sewanee for every free ball in the second half, surviving two one-up opportunities by the Tigers, to hold the visitors scoreless.
Allen continued her impressive play in the final 35 minutes, assisting on both tallies. She found Jacklyn Cheely at the 54:05 mark before Melissa Rideout scored with just under six minutes to play.
The Marlins had an opportunity to tie the game a minute after Rideout's goal on a Missy Stroup penalty corner as Caitlyn Hogge drew keeper Caroline Brennan out of position. Her shot was on line, but saved by defender Nikki Ereli for her second defensive save of the afternoon.
Sewanee maintained a slim 16-12 advantage in shots despite the Marlins outshooting the visitors 9-8 in the second half. The Tigers also led in penalty corners 10-9, although VWC had a 9-1 edge in the final period.
Brennan made four saves for Sewanee (7-2) while starter Katya Waters had a first-half stop. Skye Swain made eight saves for the Marlins.
