Women's Soccer Clinches a Home Playoff Game with 2-1 Win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team came out successful on Senior Night, winning 2-1 over Bridgewater College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) finale for both teams.

Seniors Kristen Cherry, Allie Ketzler, Kaitlyn Clunan, and Kerry Knauss were recognized in pregame festivities.

Bridgewater, entering as the second-highest scoring team in the ODAC, scored the lone goal of the first half as Nikole Blackwell took a corner kick and sent it in to Keri Rager at the 27:13 mark. Rager headed it down into the grass, and played the hop over Megan Gerhart for the game's first score. It was Rager's 14th goal of the year.

The Eagles continued to keep the pressure on in the first half as Gerhart made four saves in the first half.

The Virginia Wesleyan defense locked down in the second half, not allowing the Eagles to put a shot on goal the entire second half.

The Marlins managed to tie up the score in the process as Brooke Adamchak took a free kick from 40 yards out and launched it deep into the box, clearing the head of Hayley Talbott.

Virginia Wesleyan used the momentum of senior night to take the lead for good with just under 10 minutes remaining as senior Kristen Cherry spun around the defender and made her attempt in the top 90.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Eagles 11-8 while Bridgewater (9-7-1/6-4-1) held a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Gerhart finished with four saves while Talbott finished with three.

Virginia Wesleyan (10-9/8-3) will host Bridgewater once again in the ODAC quarterfinals to be held on Wednesday evening.
