Box Score Big Second Half Leads Generals past Marlins
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Washington and Lee University posted five goals in the second half to down the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team 6-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Tuesday afternoon.
The game remained scoreless until the 31st minute when Maggie Waxter scored on an unassisted chance.
Skye Swain had an impressive first half, making nine saves to hold Washington and Lee to just one goal.
Waxter added another score five minutes into the second half off an assist from Audrey Brady. Charlotte MacDonald added a goal and an assist in the second half while Waxter posted a third score at 57:43. Haley Tucker contributed two goals of her own just 42 seconds apart with four minutes left in the contest.
Swain finished with 13 saves while Jacqueline Llewellyn stopped six shots for Washington and Lee (9-6/5-1 ODAC).
Virginia Wesleyan (6-12/2-4) concludes regular-season play at Roanoke College (9-6/1-5) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
ODAC TOURNAMENT UPDATE
Six teams make the ODAC tournament with the top two seeds receiving byes in the first round.
Virginia Wesleyan is currently the No. 5 seed due to the Marlins' head-to-head victory over Randolph-Macon. If the Marlins defeat Roanoke on Saturday, they will be the five seed while Roanoke would be knocked out of tournament contention. A loss to the Maroons on Saturday will pull in extra tiebreakers and could leave VWC on the outside looking in as the three squads are likely to be tied.
More information on tiebreakers will be announced as necessary as the final games are played.
