Undefeated teams hold Marlins scoress in tourney action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. -- A couple of match-ups with undefeated teams ended up in a 0-2 final for the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team in the Salisbury University Invitational.

The Marlins produced a strong effort against Delaware's Wesley College, but could not find the cage in a 1-0 loss to the 4-0 Wolverines.  The effort was also there against host Salisbury, but the powerful, No. 2 ranked Sea Gulls rolled to a 9-0 victory, producing their fourth straight game scoring seven or more goals.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-3) could not find lanes open to produce shots and finished the two games without a shot overall.  The Marlins did pick up six penalty corners, including four against Wesley, but could not take advantage of the situations.

Wesley scored its lone goal early in the first half and made it stick up the rest of the way.  Salisbury (4-0) took control of that game with a five-goal first half.

Senior goalie Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) recorded 12 saves saves overall, including nine in the first half against Salisbury.  Rookie Petyon Miesse (Virginia Beach/Landstown) took over in the second half and finished with four saves.

All-South honoree Courtney Jantzen (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) led SU with four goals and an assist.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 14, in a pair of non-conference games at Marlins Field.  VWC will host the Bobcats of Frostburg State University on Saturday at noon and then welcome in the undefeated Shorewomen of Washington College on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
