Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- A fast scoring start by the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team on Saturday had an impressive twist.
The Marlins scored three goals in the first 6:10 of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest against Hollins University, with all three goals coming off the foot of rookie Lauren Shular.
Shular (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) scored off an assortment of shots ... from the right, the left, and up the middle ... to lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 9-0 win on Foster Field at the Trinder Center. Her three goals tied VWC's third highest single-game scoring total.
Hollins (0-6, 0-2), which competed with just nine players throughout the match, trailed 8-0 at halftime. Virginia Wesleyan (4-3-2, 2-0) opened up a 6-0 lead in the first 14 minutes, asSarah Nickle (Pennsville, N.J./Memorial), Annie Hartman (Leesburg/Tuscarora), and Katie Roberts (Alexandria/Thomas A. Edison) all scored goals before Marlins head coach Jeff Bowers slowed things down with a passing game.
Maddie Sanders (Midlothian/Midlothian), Kristen Cherry ( Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) and Roberts scored the first three goals of the game for VWC, which tallied just once in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Hollins 23-0 and posted a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) played in goal for the Marlins in the first half and Tiffany Lennon (Carrollton/Smithfield) took over for the second half. Audrey Haisley recorded six saves for Hollins.
VWC, which is 3-0-2 in its last five matches, competes again on Wednesday, Sept. 24, hosting Lynchburg College at 7 p.m.
