Hartman scores twice in the second half to spark VWC road win

EMORY, Va. -- A more aggressive second half of competition on both sides of the field by the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team paid off in a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the host Wasps of Emory & Henry College on Saturday.

The Marlins and Wasps played on fairly even terms in the first half, but VWC took set the tempo in the second half with a stepped-up offense and a tighter defense.  It resulted in a 10-2 advantage in shots for the Marlins, who scored both goals in the half.

Sophomore Annie Hartman (Leesburg/Tuscarora) knocked the ball into the net twice in a span of four minutes to put the Marlins (3-3-1, 1-0) on track to the win.  She scored her first goal in the 77th minute on a six-yard shot following a pass from the right side from rookie Lauren Shular (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield)

In the 81st minute it was Hartman to the net again, this time finishing off an assist from senior CeCe Valdez (Alta Loma, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos).

Sophomore Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) started in front of the goal for VWC and played into the 85th minute, recording three saves.  Sophomore Tiffany Lennon (Carrollton/Smithfield) entered in the 85th and finished for the Marlins. 

Kayla Wright (Franklin County/Franklin County) and Vicki Fenley (Chesapeake/Hickory) each played in goal for a half for EHC, producing four and five saves, respectively.

VWC returns to competition on Tuesday, Sept. 16, hosting Salisbury University in a non-conference game starting at 7 p.m.  It will be the first of four consecutive home dates for the Marlins.
