Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Skyler Weaver scored three goals for Virginia Wesleyan College's field hockey team throughout the 2013 season.
She matched that season total in one afternoon to open the 2014 season.
Weaver (Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) scored three consecutive goals Saturday to help guide the Marlins to a 6-0 non-conference victory over the Ferrum College Panthers on Marlins Field. She notched her first two goals toward the end of the first half and added the third a little more than 13 minutes into the second half.
It took a few minutes for VWC to generate a consistent offensive attack, but when passes started to connect the Marlins found themselves around the goal repeatedly. Virginia Wesleyan outshot Ferrum 19-3, including 11-0 in the second half.
Senior Danielle Pellerin (Long Valley, N.J./Chester West Morris) scored the first goal of the season for Marlins, finishing off an assist from Caitlyn Hogge (Newport News/Warwick). Two goals by Weaver followed as VWC scored three times in a span of five minutes.
Junior Danielle Benn (West Creek, N.J./Pinelands) scored her first intercollegiate goal in the second half to give the Marlins a 5-0 lead and Sam Jackson (Manassas/Osbourn) scored VWC's sixth goal as the final buzzer sounded. Jackson also recorded an assist in the contest, as did rookie Jenna Serna (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison). Hogge finished with two assists,
Senior Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) started in goal for the Marlins and recorded three saves. She protected the cage throughout the first half and rookie Peyton Miesse (Virginia Beach/Landstown) took over for the second half.
Alexis Atkinson (Virginia Beach/Bayside) and Courtney Gosslin (Mechanicsville/Lee-Davis) split goalie time for the Panthers, each playing one half. While both women allowed three goals, Atkinson recorded one save and Gosslin finished with four.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Sunday, Aug. 31, taking on national power University of Mary Washington at 3 p.m. at Marlins Field.
