WINCHESTER, Va. -- Rookie Kyler Racey's first intercollegiate victory helped Virgnia Wesleyan College's regionally-ranked Marlins to their 12th win of the season on Tuesday.
Racey (Front Royal/Skyline) played at No. 6 singles and pulled out a thrilling win that helped the Marlins to a 9-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the host Hornets of Shenandoah University. While Racey won a three-set tie-breaker with a 13-11 decision for his first win of the season, the Marlins, ranked No. 19 in the Atlantic South region, won their sixth straight match to improve to 12-3 overall and to 8-1 in the conference.
VWC's women weren't as fortunate though. The Marlins had a two-match winning streak snapped in an 8-1 loss to the Hornets. SophomoreMia Proctor (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and rookie Marissa Cifuentes (Virginia Beach/Bayside) provided the only win for the women, taking No. 1 doubles, 8-4.
Doubles play in the men's competition all went to Virginia Wesleyan, including an 8-4 win by sophomore Graham Wilson (Newport News/Menchville) and rookie Kenny Downing (Washington, D.C./Homeschooled). The duo improved to 11-3, all at the No. 1 flight.
The Marlins took singles, all in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by rookie Brendan Kelleher (Baltimore, Md./Towson) at the No. 5 flight. He improved to 10-2, winning his eighth straight match. Downing won at the No. 2 flight for his 12th win of the season and ninth in a row. Wilson won at No. 1 for his 11th win overall.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Friday, April 11, in ODAC play at Lynchburg College at 3 p.m.
