Second half scoring drought dooms VWC in loss to Guilford

Box Score

SALEM, Va. -- A span of seven minutes with only one field goal made proved to be the undoing of the Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball team in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinal game Thursday.

Two-time defending ODAC champion Guilford College pulled away from the Marlins in that span to post a 79-57 victory at the Salem Civic Center.

First-team All-ODAC honoree Brittany Glasco (Fredericksburg/Massaponax) scored three points to pull Virginia Wesleyan (17-10) within a 48-42 score with 14:26 remaining to be played ... and then it happened.  From that point until 7:34 remained in the contest, a triple by sophomore Kelly Jones (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron)and a Glasco free throw were the only points scored by the Marlins.

While the Marlins struggled to get the basketball to drop, Guilford (20-5) scored 15 points to pull away.  Six Quakers scored in the surge, led by Miranda Martin (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) with five points.  Junior Nancy Kelly (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney)hit a jumper for the Marlins at the 7:34 mark, but it only dented a 63-48 Guilford lead.

Guilford followed that with a 9-0 run that opened up a 72-48 lead with 5:15 remaining.

Virginia Wesleyan never led in the game, but kept the Quakers close through most of the first half.  Guilford opened up an eight point lead, only to see the Marlins battle back to close within a point of the lead several times, the last with 3:23 before halftime after Kelly hit a pair of free throws to cut Guilford's lead to 29-28.

A jumper by rookie Crystal Strother (Accokeek, Md./Brandywine Gwynn Park)kept the Marlins within a 34-31 score before Guilford scored five points to end the half with a 39-31 lead. Kayla Adams (Rural Hall, N.C./North Forsyth) hit a triple with one second on the clock.

Guilford scored the first four points of the second half, but Virginia Wesleyan continued to hit key baskets in the first five-plus minutes to stay close before the scoring drought started.

VWC ended up hitting only 29.5% from the field for the game, while Guilford connected on 52.5%, including over 58% in the second half.  The Marlins attempted 33 triples and hit seven, while Guilford hit 5-of-10 triple attempts.  Guilford dominated the backboards, outrebouding the Marlins 50-29.

Glasco led VWC scoring with 18 points, hitting 7-of-13 field goal attempts.  Jones and Kelly finished with 12 points each.  Kelly also led all rebounding with 11.

Former ODAC Player of the Year Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) led Guilford scoring with 20 points, hitting 8-of-12 field goal attempts. Morgan King (Teachey, N.C./New Hanover) added 14 points, Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) tallied 11, and Jennette Taylor (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) added 10.
