Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- An exhange of scoring spurts late in the first half Tuesday catapulted Lynchburg College's Hornets in to a lead they never lost en route to a 79-54 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins.
A triple by Charmaine Hairston (Rocky Mount/Franklin County) gave Lynchburg (14-8, 11-2) a 23-12 lead with 12:07 remaining to be played in the first half. But, Virginia Wesleyan (13-9, 7-6) used an 11-0 run to tie the game at 23-all with 10:11 on the clock. Senior Katie Tassa (Bristow/Manassas Osbourn Park) and juniors Brittany Glasco (Fredericksburg/Massaponax) and Kerri Taylor (Stockport, England/The Hill School, Pa.) hit a triple each in the Marlins' scoring spurt.
Shannon Allan (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) hit a jumper to get Lynchburg back on the scoreboard and ignite a 10-0 scoring surge for the Hornets to open up a 33-23 lead with 5:50 remaining to be played in the half. VWC never got closer than eight points thereafter, as Lynchburg extended its lead to 42-29 at halftime.
Lynchburg maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
Glasco, back playing for the Marlins after sitting out three games recovering from a concussion, led VWC scoring with 16 points. Rookie Crystal Strother (Accokeek, Md./Brandywine Gwynn Park) hit a game-high three triples and finished with 11 points. The Marlins connected on eight triples overall. Nancy Kelly (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney)helped VWC with three blocks.
Allen led four Hornets in double-figure scoring with 19 points. Hairston finished with 16. Chaney Forbush led all rebounding with 10. She also scored 12 points.
VWC returns to competition on Saturday, Feb. 15, hosting Hollins University in ODAC action beginning at 2 p.m.
