Virginia Wesleyan falls to No. 2 Lynchburg in overtime

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Lynchburg College's Hornets entered Wednesday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinal game ranked as the third-highest scoring team in Division III.

The top-seeded Hornets, ranked No. 2 among the nation's top 20 teams, produced 26 shots against fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College, but could not find a score in regulation time against the scrappy Marlins.

After two scoreless halves, Lynchburg finally got a shot past Virginia Wesleyan when Morgan Singer (Yorktown/Grafton) scored 6:10 into overtime.  The goal lifted Lynchburg to a 1-0 victory, improved the Hornets' record to 21-0, and moved LC into the ODAC title game on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Virginia Wesleyan (12-7-2) managed only two shots in each half, including two in the first four minutes of the second half by junior Kristen Cherry (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton). Rookie Alexia Vassiliadis (Somerset, N.J./Edison Bishop George Ahr) had a late first-half shot blocked.

Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn)finished with five saves for VWCLynchburg's Tess Frelick (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) had two saves, both on the second-half shots by Cherry.
