Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- One of the more interesting match-ups in a eight-team seeded tournament is usually the showdown between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeded teams.
That match-up of evenly-matched teams became even more interesting in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinals on Saturday when long-time rivals Roanoke College and Virginia Wesleyan College collided or the ninth time in tourney play.
It was a knock-for-knock battle throughout most of the first half on Foster Field at the Trinder Center, before one big kick helped put the No. 4 Marlins in control and on their way to a 2-0 victory ... VWC's seventh straight ODAC tourney win against Roanoke in nine tries.
JuniorAllie Ketzler (Bedford, Mass./West Morris Central) stunned the Maroons when she boomed the ball into the net from a little more than 30 yards out on the right side off a corner kick by rookie Lauren Shular (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield). The ball ailed into the upper left corner of the goal in the 43rd minute to give VWC a 1-0 lead and an advantage it never relinquished en route to its second win of the season over Roanoke. VWC posted a 1-0 win in regular-season play in October.
It was a goal that sparked Virginia Wesleyan (12-6-2) for the remainder of the game as the Marlins kept the pressure on the Maroons with an attack that produced seven shots and kept Roanoke (11-7-1) from finding any at all. VWC's 7-0 shot advantage in the second half led to a 13-5 difference for the game.
Senior Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) padded the Marlins' lead in the 59th minute with a header that hit the cross bar and bounced into the goal area. Ketzler was credited with the assist. The goals were the second of the season for Mack and Ketzler.
Junior goalie Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) recorded three saves as she helped guide the Marlins to their 10th shutout win of the season. She improved her goals against average to 0.88 and her saves percentage to .807. Roanoke keeper Carolyn Sarbacher (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) finished with seven for the Maroons.
Virginia Wesleyan advances to semifinal action on Wednesday, November 5, when the Marlins travel to Lynchburg to face the top-seeded Hornets of Lynchburg College at a time to be determined.
