Marlins ride Ammon goal to victory over Roanoke

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Bryn Ammon scored in the 17th minute of Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) field hockey game to help Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Maroons of Roanoke College.

After moving within striking distance several times in the early minutes of the Homecoming/Parents Weekend game on Marlins Field, the Marlin saw their persistence pay off.  Sophomore Caitlyn Hogge (Newport News/Warwick) fired a pass to Ammon (Parkesburg, Pa./Coatesville)on the left side of the field and Ammon knocked the ball into the left corner for the cage from about five yards out.

It was a goal that held up for the remainder of the contest as the Marlins snapped a four-game losing slide and improved to 3-7 overall and to 1-1 in the ODAC. Roanoke dropped to 5-6 overall and to 1-2 in the league.

Roanoke came on strong in the second half to outshoot the Marlins 3-2 and earn six corners, but the Virginia Wesleyan defense stepped in to divert shots or take the ball.  Seniors Tanya Puccio (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) and Jenny Wilkins (Chesapeake/Virginia Beach Bishop Sullivan Catholic) and sophomore Alyssa Ochsenfeld (Hampton/Hampton) were among the Marlins who keyed the stopping effort.

Both teams produced five shots overall, but Roanoke finished with an 11-6 advantage in corners.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Washington and Lee University (6-5) at 6 p.m.
