Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Homecoming/Parents Weekend athletic competition ended on a high note for Virginia Wesleyan College as the women's soccer team posted a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Maroons of Roanoke College.

Playing before a large Trinder Center crowd, the host Marlins scored early and backed it with steady defensive play to record the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory.

Junior Kristen Cherry (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) gave the Marlins (7-4-2, 5-1) the lead in the 21st minute when she scored from about 15 yards out on running shot from the left.  The Marlins continued to keep pressure on the Maroons (7-5, 3-3) for the remainder of the game with a steady offensive attack, but could not get the ball into the net.

Virginia Wesleyan produced nine shots in each half and finished with an 18-7 advantage in shots overall. The Marlins also recorded a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Marlins return to competition on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Lynchburg to take on the WildCats of Randolph College at 7 p.m.
