Shular, Hartman spark VWC victory at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. -- Offense continued to flow for the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team Tuesday as the Marlins posted a 5-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory at Randolph-Macon College.

After a pair of disappointing scoreless losses on the road, the Marlins have recovered to win three consecutive ODAC contests, outscoring the trio of foes 15-1.

Sophomore Annie Hartman (Leesburg/Tuscarora) and rookieLauren Shular (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield)extended their team-leading scoring productions as both Marlins knocked in a pair of goals.  Shular also registered an assist on Hartman's second goal to increase her season point total to 22.

Virginia Wesleyan picked up its 11th victory of the season with the win, improving to 11-6-2 overall and to 9-3 in the ODACRandolph-Macon dropped to 9-7-1 overall and to 6-6 in the league.

Hartman helped put the Marlins in control early, scoring in the 14th minute off an assist from rookie Zoe Traficante (Chalfont, Pa./Doylestown Central Bucks West). Shular followed with a pair of goals, putting the ball into the net in the 25th minute, off a Kristen Cherry (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) assist, and scoring again unassisted in the 41st minute.

Randolph-Macon trailed 3-0 at halftime and remained scoreless throughout most of the second half. But, Keeley Miller (Bealeton/Liberty) helped the Yellow Jackets to avert the shutout with a goal in the 75th minute.  She was assisted by Maegan Beck (Gloucester/Gloucester).

VWC responded by padding its lead in the final minutes, however.  Rookie Alexis Vassiliadis (Somerset, N.J./Edison Bishop George Ahr)scored in the 86th minute, assisted by Cherry, and Hartman capped Marlin scoring with a shot into the net in the 88th minute.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot R-MC 21-11, including a 12-4 difference in the first half.  The Marlins also recorded a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. 

Both teams used a pair of goalies to protect the net.  VWC sophomores Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Tiffany Lennon (Carrollton/Smithfield)recorded two saves each as both played 45 minutes.  Elizabeth Blanco (Ashburn/Stone Bridge) and Hannah Moyer (Richmond/Deep Run) played a half each for the Jackets.  Moyer finished with one save.
