Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Annie Hartman scored her sixth goal of the season and Cat Galway and Rachel Laulette each tallied their first to help lead Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer Marlins to a 3-0 victory over Guilford College's Quakers on Saturday.
Playing before a Senior Day crowd at the Trinder Center, the Marlins controlled tempo from start-to-finish en route to improving to 10-6-2 overall and to 8-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition. Guilford fell to 2-15-1 overall and to 2-9 in the league.
Galway (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg), a sophomore, became the 12th Marlin to score a goal this season when she put the ball into the back of the net in the 26th minute. VWC produced four more shots before halftime, but had to settle for the 1-0 lead at the break.
Each team produced a header in the early minutes of the second half, but the score remained 1-0 until the Marlins tallied in the 64th minute. Hartman (Leesburg/Tuscarora), another sophomore, scored the goal, finishing off an assist from Galway.
Laulette (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) capped scoring for Virginia Wesleyan, heading the ball into the goal in the 87th minute, becoming the 13th Marlin to record a goal this season.
Virginia Wesleyan produced a 22-3 advantage in shots, including a 10-1 difference in the first half. The Marlins also posted a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn)protected the goal for Virginia Wesleyan. Caitlyn Young (Raphine, Va./Rockbridge County) was in goal for Guilford and recorded 11 saves.
Virginia Wesleyan will close out the regular season on the road, playing Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Randolph-Macon College at 4 p.m.
