Randolph-Macon rides big second half to win over Marlins

ASHLAND, Va. -- Second half competition favored Randolph-Macon College's field hockey team Wednesday as the Yellow Jackets rode a stepped-up offensive effort to a 5-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the visiting Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.

Virginia Wesleyan (3-12, 1-5) played evenly with the Jackets (5-10, 4-2) throughout the first half, which showed 10 shots for each team.  R-MC pushed in front 2-0 on early goals by Mackenzie Turner (Virginia Beach/Tallwood) and Carrie Jaobs (Orange/Orange County), but VWC pulled within a goal before halftime.  SeniorSkyler Weaver (Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) scored in the 20th minute off an assist by rookie Jenna Serna (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison).

That close game shifted in favor of the Jackets in the second half as R-MC outshot the Marlins 16-3 en route to a 26-13 advantage for the game.  The host team also produced a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners.  Catherine Pricone (Arlington/Washington-Lee), Kali Carroll (Earlysville/Albemarle), and Victoria Capadora (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) all guided the ball into the cage for the Jackets for the 5-1 final.

Senior goalie Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) recorded 12 saves for VWC.  Kelsey Stanley (Bumpass/Louisa County) recorded seven saves for R-MC.

Virginia Wesleyan will host Lynchburg College on Saturday, Oct. 25 in the annual Senior Day game starting at 1 p.m.
