Marlins defeated by Williams-led Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Matters started off well on Saturday for the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team.

The Marlins finished off a two-on-one fast break with a goal to take a 1-0 lead over the host Royals of Eastern Mennonite University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition.

But, EMU tied the game shortly before halftime and tacked on two unanswered goals in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory.  While the Royals improved to 2-2 in the league and 3-10 overall, the Marlins fell to 1-3 in the ODAC and to 3-9 overall

Senior Bryn Ammon (Parkesburg, Pa./Coatesville)put VWC in the lead in the seventh minute of competition, finishing off a pass from Skyler Weaver (Frederick, Md./Huntingtown). It was a lead that held up until the 33rd minute when Camille Williams (Media, Pa./Delaware County Christian) scored the first of her three goals on the day.

Williams, one of the leading scorers in the ODAC, added her 10th and 11th goals of the season in the second half.  She scored with a little more than two minutes played in the second half and gave the Royals a 3-1 lead with a goal in the 62nd minute.

EMU played an aggressive first half that resulted in 17 shots.  But, VWC goalie Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) stepped up to make six saves.  She finished with eight overall.

Eastern Mennonite produced a 26-6 advantage overall in shots and a 15-5 difference in penalty corners.

VWC returns to competition on Sunday, Oct. 12, in a non-league game at St. Mary's College of Maryland beginning at 1:30 p.m.   St. Mary's is currently 8-3 and riding a five-game winning streak.
