Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- A competitive first half yielded a 1-0 lead for Washington and Lee University's women's soccer team on Saturday, but that's as close as it would get for the visiting Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.
Second half play saw the host Generals find all the breaks in the VWC defense necessary to score three more goals en route to a stunning 4-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory. The victory keeps Washington and Lee undefeated overall and in league play with 9-0-1 and 7-0 records, while VWC has a four-game winning streak snapped and falls to 8-5-2 and 6-2.
The Generals scored the only goal of the first half in the 37th minute on a shot by Hollis Tardy (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School). The score stayed that way until midway through the second half when WLU started to pull away with two goals tallied in five minutes. Katie Rossi (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) gave the Generals a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute and Erin Harvey (Mission Hills, Kan./Pembroke Hill) made it a 3-0 advantage with a score in the 67th minute. The host team made it 4-0 in the 78th minute on a shot by Tricia Jesse (Roanoke/Patrick Henry).
Washington and Lee finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots, while VWC posted a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks, aided by a 5-3 difference in the second half. Goalkeeper Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn)finished with three saves for VWC and Addie Healy (Waterford/Woodgrove) recorded for for WLU.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Oct. 15, hosting Eastern Mennonite University in an ODAC contest beginning at 7 p.m.
