Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer team got off to a fast start Wednesday and continued to roll to a 6-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the host Vixens of Sweet Briar College.
Junior Kristen Cherry (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) got it all started when she split two defenders on the left side and ripped off a goal-scoring shot from about 15 yards out in the ninth minute.
That basically set the tone for what was to follow, as the Marlins (6-4-2, 4-1 ODAC) reeled off five second half goals to help claim the win. Sweet Briar (5-3, 2-3 ODAC) was unable to find a shot against the Marlin defense that stayed fresh with waves of subs throughout the game. VWC produced a 29-0 advantage in shots and a 7-1 difference in corner kicks.
Rookie Katie Roberts (Alexandria/Thomas A. Edison) ledge VWC's scoring parade with a pair of goals, the second and third of the game, to increase her season total to a team-leading six. She scored in the 29th minute from the left off a cross from rookieErin Chamberlin (Pasadena, Md./Milllersville Old Mill) and tallied again in the 34th minute on a 15-yarder on a run from the right. Rookie Krissy Richards (Stafford/Colonial Forge) assisted on the goal.
Roberts also came through with an assist on VWC's fourth in the 36th minute, getting the ball to rookie Maddie Sanders (Midlothian/Midlothian) for a shot at close range.
Senior Sarah Nickle (Pennsville, N.J./Memorial) scored the fifth goal for the Marlins, in the 45thminute, and rookie Alexia Vassiliadis (Somerset, N.J./Edison Bishop George Ahr) recorded the only second half score on a shot from long range in the 58th minute.
