Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Brittany Glasco scored on back-to-back layups in the final 3:26 Saturday to give Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins their first lead of the second half against the host Quakers of Guilford College.
Kelly Jones (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), Cassie Conley (New Market/Stonewall Jackson), and Kerri Taylor (Stockport, England/The Hill School, Pa.) all followed with crucial points to help guide the Marlins to a 56-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the two-time defending league champions.
VWC's victory snapped a four-game winning streak by the Quakers in the series with the Marlins, and marked the Marlins' sixth win in the last seven outings this season.
Jennette Taylor (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) scored on a jumper to give Guilford at 43-31 lead with 10:06 remaining Saturday, but the Quakers were unable to pull away. Glasco (Fredericksburg/Massaponax) followed that score with a three pointer that ignited an impressive finish by Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins outscored Guilford 25-9 in the final 10 minutes of the game to take the win.
Six Marlins scored in that closing run, led by Glasco with 11 of her game-high 20 points. Her scoring effort was her second consecutive 20+ point total to date this season. Glasco hit 6-of-15 shots overall, but utilized her quickness and driving abilities to draw fouls. She led VWC at the free throw lines, hitting 7-of-10 attempts. Glasco also recorded nine rebounds and four assists.
Virginia Wesleyan (10-3, 4-0) led by seven points early in the contest, but Logan Hardin (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove), Morgan King (Teachy, N.C./New Hanover), Lila Scott (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill), and Kayla Adams (Rural Hall, N.C./North Forsyth) led Guilford (10-3, 2-2) on an 11-3 run late in the first half to take a 28-20 at halftime.
Taylor nailed a triple to open second half scoring for the host team, which outscored VWC 7-0 in the first two minutes to open up a 35-20 lead. Jones connected on a triple and Nancy Kelly (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) scored for Virginia Wesleyan to prevent the Quakers from pulling too far away.
Rookie Alexis Platt (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) and Jones scored to pull VWC within a 39-31 score, before Guilford scored four unanswered points to push its lead back to 12 points at 43-31.
Seconds later, with 9:43 showing on the clock, Glasco drilled her triple that ignited VWC's run to victory.
Jones hit 5-of-10 shots, including three triples, to finish with 13 points for the Marlins. She also recorded a game-high four steals. Platt finished with seven points and Kelly helped the cause with a team-high 10 rebounds. VWC outrebounded Guilford, 46-43.
King led Guilford with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Scott added 11 points. Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) and Adams led the Quakers with five assists each.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Jan. 15, hosting Eastern Mennonite University at 7 p.m. EMU was the preseason favorite to win the 2014 ODAC title.
