Roanoke ekes out 1-0 overtime win over Marlins

SALEM, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's field hockey team stepped up its game in the second half Saturday, but could not squeeze out a goal in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game against the host Maroons of Roanoke College.

Roanoke came up with a goal by Shelbi Holloman (Suffolk/Nansemond River) off a penalty corner opportunity in the 67th minute to pin a 1-0 overtime upset loss on Virginia Wesleyan.  Isabella Lucia (Middletown, Del./Middletown) assisted on the goal.

While Roanoke improved to 2-5 overall and to 1-0 in the league, Virginia Wesleyan dropped to 5-2 overall and to 1-1 in the ODAC.

Virginia Wesleyan, which produced seven second half shots after attempting just two in the first half, had its best scoring chances late in the half off a pair of penalty corners.  But, a shot at 57:03 by Nikki Cuthbert (Morrisville, Pa./Fairless Hills Pennsbury) was saved by Roanoke goalie Candice Fisher (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) and another Cuthbert shot 28 seconds later was blocked by the Maroon defense.

Roanoke finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots and a slim 9-7 edge in penalty corners. Virginia Wesleyan recorded all seven of its corners in the second half.

Junior goalie Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) recorded seven saves for the Marlins and Fisher finished with four.

Virginia Wesleyan stays on the road for a game on Sunday, Sept. 29, visiting Sweet Briar College for a  2:30 p.m. start with the Vixens in ODAC competition.
