Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH --As the final minute of Saturday's women's soccer game ticked off the clock at the Trinder Center, it looked as though Washington and Lee University and Virginia Wesleyan College would record the sixth tie in a series that began in 1988.
There was only one change. A major change.
While the teams were battling for possession of the ball on the left side of the goal, Washington and Lee's Holley Beasley (Virginia Beach/Norfolk Academy) got a foot on the ball and found one of the few openings in the crowd of bodies. She kicked and scored with just 31 seconds remaining, lifting the Generals to a 1-0 double overtime tie on Foster Field.
The lone goal marked the 25th one-goal outcomes in the series between the schools, which Virginia Wesleyan now leads 16-14-5.
Intense, physical defensive play dominated the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game, which presented very few opportunities to put the ball into the net. While KJ Lancaster (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International), Erin Harvey (Mission Hills, Kan./Pembroke Hill) and Katie Clemmons (Phoenix, Ariz./Chaparral) emerged among the leader for the Generals' defensive effort, it was Kat Ditta (Charlottesville/Fluvanna County), Angel Horowitz (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), Allie Ketzler (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central), and Amanda Baxeter (Lorton/South County) who came up with big defensive plays for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-2-2, 3-1) got off to a slow start offensively and managed just one shot in the first half, while Washington and Lee (8-1, 4-0) got off four attempts. The Marlins picked up the pace in the second half and outshot the Generals 7-6 with a balanced spray of attempts. The Marlins went on to outshoot WLU 3-1 in the overtime periods, but could not find the back of the net.
Both teams finished with 11 shots, but it was Virginia Wesleyan that held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) recorded three saves for VWC and Addie Healy (Waterford/Woodgrove) had four for WLU.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Tuesday, Oct. 1, playing at league-leading Lynchburg College at 6 p.m.
