Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Just a couple inches over five feet in height, Kaitlyn Clunan would not be considered an imposing presence on the soccer field.
But, she is increasingly making herself known as dangerous.
The Virginia Weslyan College sophomore from Virginia Beach (Bayside) scored her seventh goal of the season in nine outings Tuesday to help guide the Marlins to a 4-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the WildCats of Randolph College on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
Clunan headed the goal into the middle of the net, finishing a cross from junior Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg/Jamestown), to give Virginia Wesleyan a 3-0 lead. Her goal was part of a three-goal surge by the Marlins in a seven-minute span in the second half.
VWC, now 6-1-2 overall and 3-0 in the ODAC, led just 1-0 at halftime, helped by a booming kick by rookie Annie Hartman (Leesburg/Tuscarora). She nailed the ball into the net from about 25 yards out on the left side.
A reenergized Virginia Wesleyan team returned to the field for the second half and attacked the goal aggressively in the early going. The effort paid off as the Marlins scored three goals in a little more than six minutes, beginning with a header by junior Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) in the 51st minute, off a cross from Jasmine Dao (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
A little more than two minutes later Clunan scored and four minutes later senior Nicole Martinez (Fredericksburg/Chancellor) tallied on another header into the middle of the net off a corner kick from Dao.
Randolph (2-6, 0-3) had little success in advancing the ball against the Virginia Wesleyan defense, which recorded its seventh shutout of the season and fourth in a row. The WildCats averted a game without a shot when Marielle Rando (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) found an open lane to the goal for a shot, which was stopped by VWC goalie Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn).
Virginia Wesleyan, which utilized 29 players in the game, dominated offensively, out-shooting the 'Cats 23-1 overall. The Marlins also posted a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Caitlin Annunziata (Havelock, N.C./Havelock) recorded five saves for Randolph
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Sept. 28, in a key ODAC battle, hosting the Generals of Washington and Lee University at 6 p.m. The Generals improved to 7-1 overall and to 3-0 in the league Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Roanoke College.
