Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer Marlins scored twice in the first half Saturday against the host Guilford College Quakers, but erupted for five goals in the second half en route to a 7-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.
Four Marlins scored goals, led by Kerry Knauss (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) and Kaitlyn Clunan (Virginia Beach/Bayside) with two each. Knauss started the scoring in the 12th minute and junior Marta Deptula (Haskell, N.J./Paramus Catholic) added the second goal in the 16th minute.
Scoring began early in the second half for the Marlins when Clunan scored 50 minutes into the competition off an assist from Allie Ketzler (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central). The Marlns played nearly 12 minutes without another goal before scoring three in a span of six minutes. Goals by Knauss and Clunan pushed the lead to 5-0 and a score by Jasmine Dao (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) made it 6-0. Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville), Melinda Myers (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) and Virginia Hernandez (Virginia Beach/Landstown) were credited with assists on the goals.
VWC's seventh goal was an own goal, knocked in off a corner kick.
Virginia Wesleyan finished the game with a 47-1 advantage in shots and a 10-0 difference in corner kicks.
Abby Gove (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) recorded 17 saves for Guilford in nearly 71 minutes of play. Caitlyn Young (Raphine, Va./Rockbridge County) protected the goal fo 19:17 and produced four saves.
Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) played in goal for VWC from start to finish.
Virgina Wesleyan plays again on Tuesday, Sept. 24, hosting Randolph College at 6 p.m. in conference competition.
