No. 6 Christopher Newport ekes out 1-0 win over VWC

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- One game after recording a career-best effort in goal for the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team, junior goalie Lindsay Baker topped the effort against No. 6-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday.

Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford)faced a potent CNU offense on the Captains's field and helped the Virginia Wesleyan defense limit the host team to a single goal.  Christopher Newport (7-0) slipped past VWC 1-0 in the non-conference contest, pinning the first loss of the season on the Marlins (3-1).

CNU, held to its lowest goal output of the season for the second time in seven games, fired 26 shots at Baker, who recorded a career-high 14 saves.  That topped her previous career-high of 13 recorded in a 2-1 overtime victory over Frostburg State University last Sunday. Baker came through big for the Marlins early in the second half when CNU fired three shots in a span of six seconds and saw all three knocked down.

Junior Tanya Puccio (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) contributed to the Marlins' strong defensive effort when she recorded a defensive save late in the first half on a shot by the Captains' Belle Tunstall (Vienna/James Madison).

Kelsey Clark (Arlington/Washington-Lee) emerged with the only goal in the same, scoring at the 10:32 mark of the game, assisted by Lauren Cheatham (Newport News/Denbigh).

Bailey Lien (Mechanicsville/Hanover) recorded two saves for CNU.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Sept. 21, hosting Washington and Lee University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition at 11:30 a.m.  The Marlins also host Newberry College on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m.  Both games, the first two home contests of the season for VWC, will be played on Marlins Field adjacent to the Trinder Center.
