Five Marlins score in 7-0 conference win at Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. -- Five Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer players scored, including four for the first times this season, as the Marlins rolled to a 7-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory at Hollins University on Saturday.

Junior Marta Deptula (Haskell, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and rookie Annie Hartman (Leesburg/Tuscarora) led the effort with two goals each, while senior Emily Sheridan (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro), junior Sarah Nickle (Pennsville, N.J./Memorial) and rookie Catherine Galway (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) added a goal each.  The goals were the first of the season for Sheridan, Nickle, Deptula and Galway.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-1-1, 1-0), which rebounded from its first loss of the season last Wednesday, won for the 25th time against Hollins (1-3, 0-1) in a series that began in 1989. The Marlins have not allowed a goal to HU since 2003.

Hollins goalkeeper Megan McKee (Madison, Ala./Sparkman) produced 18 saves against a Virginia Wesleyan offensive attack that out-shot the host team 45-5. The Marlins also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-1.

Virginia Wesleyan played a little more than 20 minutes before Hartman ended the scoreless game with a scoring shot 23:02 into the game. Three minutes later Galway scored to make it a 2-0 lead. The Marlins extended their lead to 4-0 before halftime as Sheridan and Deptula scored within three minutes of each other, with Sheridan tallying first in the 40th minute.

The Marlins also produced close goals in the second half when Hartman scored at 70:11, followed by Nickle at 71:40.  Deptula capped scored at 81:54, assisted by Nickle.

Rookie goalie Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) recorded one save for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Sept. 18, motoring into Maryland to face host Salisbury University in non-conference play at 4 p.m.
