Marlins improve to 2-0 with comeback win at Neumann

Box Score

ASTON, Pa. -- After falling behind 2-0 in the first 16 minutes of competition at Neumann University on Sunday, it would have been easy for the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team to fizzle in the non-conference game.

But, it was nothing like that. The Marlins ignited after the Knights' scoring to start to take over the contest. VWC cut the deficit to 2-1 by halftime and dominated the second half en route to an impressive 4-2 road victory at Neumann's Turf Field.

Senior Nikki Cuthbert (Morrsville, Pa./Fairless Hills Pennsburg) got things started for VWC (2-0) when she scored an unassisted goal in the 34th minute.  Junior Skyler Weaver (Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) tallied in the 46th minute off an assist from senior Kelly Mullahy (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) to tie the game.

Thirty-nine seconds later rookie Asiah Allen (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) gave Virginia Wesleyan the lead when she tallied off an assist by Martha Staring (Little Falls, N.Y./Little Falls).  The Marlins tacked on their fourth goal in the 59th minutes when rookie Cailtyn Hogge (Newport News/Warwick) scored off an assist from Cuthbert.

Virginia Wesleyan finished the game out-shooting Neumann 22-9, including 11-3 in the second half.  VWC also held the upperhand in penalty corners, 13-7, helped by a 6-1 difference in the second half.

Kirsten Olson (Springfield/Lorton South County) started in goal for the Marlins and junior Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) finished. Baker recorded three saves. Becca Wallace (Linthicum, Md./Seton Keough) was in goal for Neumann for 58:07 and recorded 12 saves. Lindsey Kasecamp (Bel Air, Md./Patterson Mill) finished.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Sunday, Sept. 15, in Frostburg, Maryland, facing the Bobcats of Frostburg State University at 1 p.m.
