EWING, N.J. -- It was a weekend of top-notch competition for the Virginia Wesleyan College tennis teams who dropped matches to two powers, the University of Mary Washington and The College of New Jersey.
The VWC (0-3) men fell 8-1 to New Jersey (2-0), while the women (1-2) fell 7-2 to a Lions team that improved to 8-0. The Virginia Wesleyan also dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 27 ranked Mary Washington (3-0).
Rookies Drew Tomajczyk (Chesterfield/Home schooled) and Graham Wilson (Newport News/Menchville)picked up the victory for VWC's men against New Jersey, outlasting the Lions' duo of Marc Nichols (Lawrenceville, N.J./Princeton) and Howard Telson (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) 9-8 (7-4).
The Lions' men swept singles in straight sets, but could not do the same in the women's competition. VWC rookie Sara Yousif (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Manus Academy) produced the singles win for the Marlins, holding off Jasmine Muniz-Cadorette (Union, N.J./Union) 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. It was the first singles loss at the No. 2 spot for Muniz-Cadorette who fell to 12-3 overall.
Virginia Wesleyan also picked up a win in doubles, at the No. 3 spot. Senior Stephanie Bittner (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key)and rookie Mia Procto (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) defeated Bianca Caracappa (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven) and Victoria Michels (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) 8-5.
Mary Washington was denied a sweep in straight sets in singles when Yousif pushed senior Cassie Bowman (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) into three sets. Bowman won the first set 6-0, but Yousif came back to take the second set 6-2. A third set battle ended in a 10-8 win for Bowman.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on March 2 when the men and women host Methodist University at 2 p.m.
