Box Score

SALEM, Va. -- Sophomores Brittany Glasco and Andrea Paphites combined to score 36 points Saturday, but it wasn't enough to help the Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball Marlins in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinal game against defending league champion Guilford College.

The Quakers (23-4) put together and 18-6 scoring run in the second half at the Civic Center to pull away for a 75-61 victory.

Paphites (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) nailed a three-pointer and Glasco (Fredericksburg/Massaponax) followed with a layup to pull Virginia Wesleyan (18-9) within a 38-33 score with 16:02 remaining to be played in the game when Guilford started its decisive run.

Senior standout Brittany Atwater (Durham, N.C./Ravenscroft) started the Quakers' surge with a pair of free throws.  Seven minutes later Guilford owned a 56-39 lead, as Atwater scored eight points in the run and Morgan King (Teachey, N.C./New Hanover) added six.

Virginia Wesleyan never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Virginia Wesleyan lead throughout most of the first half before Guilford tied the game on a pair of freebies by Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor).  The Quakers used a 10-0 surge to open up a 29-19 first half lead.  Glasco hit a three-pointer as time expired in the half to pull VWC within a 33-26 score at the break.

Atwater led Guilford scoring with 25 points, hitting 9-of-12 field goal attempts. Oglesby added 19 points and 14 rebounds and King finished with 12 points.

Guilford helped itself with a solid effort at the charity stripes, hitting 25-of-32 attempts, led by Oglesby's 9-of-10 showing.  VWC hit 13-of-25, led by junior Symonne Newsome (Reistertown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), who hit 5-of-6.
