Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Anna Theisen knocked in a header off a corner kick from Nikole Blackwell to lift Bridgewater College's Eagles to a 1-0 upset victory in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinal tournament game over host Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday.
Bridgewater, which entered the game on Foster Field at the Trinder Center as the No. 6 seed in the ODAC event, scored its goal over No. 3 seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the 87th minute. While Bridgewater continues on into the tournament with an 11-7-1 record, Virginia Wesleyan ends its season with a 12-5-2 record.
Both teams struggled through a sloppy, turnover-plagued first half, which produced only four shots at the nets. There were 11 fouls called in the half, including eight against the Marlins.
Competitiveness picked up somewhat in the second half, as both teams began working the ball toward the goal for decent shots. But, the defensive efforts by the Eagles and the Marlins kept the game scoreless until Theisen came through on the header in the waning minutes of the contest.
Bridgewater finished with a 10-7 edge in shots and both teams recorded five corner kicks. Rookie Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) finished with three saves for the Marlins. Taylor Riley recorded three for Bridgewater.
