Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Bridgewater College's field hockey team got off to a fast start Saturday and Virginia Wesleyan College's host Marlins were forced to place chase the rest of the way in a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) loss.
Bridgewater (7-3, 1-1) scored twice in the early minutes, taking a 1-0 lead on a shot by Taylor Prillaman (Magnolia Del./Caesar Rodney) just 2:33 into the game, and making it a 2-0 lead at the 7:12 mark on a shot by Megan Gould (Fredericksburg/Mountain View). Caroline Augsburger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) assisted on the first goal and Prillaman on the second.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-3, 2-2) closed the scoring gap before halftime however, when Sam Jackson (Manassas/Osbourn) knocked the ball into the left side of the cage at the 26:25 mark. Danielle Pellerin (Long Valley, N.J./Chester West Morris) recorded the assist on the goal.
The Marlins moved the ball within scoring range several times throughout the game, but were unable to find the shots to capitalize.
Bridgewater padded its lead early in the second half when Rachael Loy (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) scored from about five yards out, assisted by Jennifer Tompkins (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll).
The visiting Eagles finished with a 14-8 edge in shots and a 16-10 advantage in penalty corners. Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) recorded seven saves for VWC. Jessica Balsano (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with one save for Bridgewater.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Sunday, Oct. 6, hosting Randolph-Macon College in an ODAC contest beginning at 3 p.m.
