Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Seven women scored for Virginia Wesleyan College on Tuesday as the Marlins closed the regular season with a 9-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win ove Sweet Briar College on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

Sophomore Kristen Cherry (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) and rookie Brittany Wentzel (Etters, Pa./Lewisberry Red Land) scored two goals each for the Marlins, who improved to 12-4-2 overall and to 9-3 in the ODAC.  VWC will enter the upcoming conference championship tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Virginia Wesleyan dominated Tuesday's contest, outshooting the Vixens (3-11-1, 1-11) by a 35-0 margin.  Vixen goalie Katie Tillson (Mechanicsville/Atlee) finished with 12 saves and there was one team stop.

Cherry started the scoring for the Marlins in the 10th minute on a 10 yard shot on the run from the right. Jasmine Dao (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and Kaitlyn Clunan (Virginia Beach/Bayside) both added first half goals around two scores by Wentzel to help VWC to a 5-0 halftime lead.

Defensive standout Angel Horowitz (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) turned scorer early in the second half, firing the ball in on the run from about 10 yards out on the left side.  Nine minutes later Cherry fired the ball into the net from 20 yards out and Rebecca Staylor (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) and rookie Kayela Gray (Virginia Beach/Salem) closed out the goal-scoring.

Pairings for the ODAC tournament will be announced later this week.
