Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- It wasn't the kind of Senior Day the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey Marlins hoped for on Saturday.
The Marlins dominated Eastern Mennonite University's Royals everywhere but on the scoreboard as the visitors from Harrisonburg, Virginia, posted a 5-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory in the regular-season finale.
Virginia Wesleyan (7-8, 2-6) posted a 27-13 advantage in shots, including a 17-8 difference in the second half, and owned a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners, helped by an 8-1 difference in the second half.
But, the Royals (4-13, 4-3) hit the scoreboard just five minutes into the competition and posted leads of 3-0 at halftime and 5-0 early in the second half before Virginia Wesleyan could get the ball into the cage
Senior Taylor Lober (Wilmington, Del./Concord) scored first for VWC to avert the shutout, hitting in the 57th minute. Senior Nikki Cuthbert (Morrisville, Pa./Fairless hills Pennsbury) added a goal in the 64th minute for the Marlins.
Melissa Cox (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) led EMU with three goals.
Kirsten Olson (Springfield/Lorton South County) recorded one save for Virginia Wesleyan in goal andLindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) finished with five. Mary Beth Danaher (Matoaca, Va./Matoaca) recorded 10 saves for EMU.
