Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Rookie Annie Hartman is no stranger to scoring for the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team, but her first goal of Saturday's 6-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Emory & Henry College caught even her by surprise.
Five minutes into the second half Hartman (Leesburg/Tuscarora) took her position to deliver a corner kick from the right. She came through with a strong kick that not only sailed over the pack of players in front of the goal, but also continued its flight with a curve into the left corner for a score that gave the Marlins a 3-0 lead.
An elated Hartman had barely stopped celebrating that goal when she struck again. This time it was with another strong shot, this one from about 15 yards on the run from the right just 76 seconds after her first goal.
Hartman was one of five Marlins to get into the goal-scoring column on Senior Day on Foster Field at the Trinder Center, where Virginia Wesleyan posted its 11th shutout of the season and fourth in a row. Goalie Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) finished with one save as part of a stingy defensive effort that gave up one one shot to the Wasps (4-12-1, 4-6-1).
Virginia Wesleyan (11-4-2, 8-3), which finished with 24 shots and a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks, started scoring in the eighth minute when sophomore Allie Ketzler (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) hit from five yards out on the right off a cross from Hartman.
The Marlins took a 2-0 lead into halftime after junior Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) scored in the 21st minute with a short kick over the goal line in the middle of the field.
Hartman's back-to-back goals early in the second half made it a 4-0 VWC lead before junior Marta Deptula (Haskell, N.J./Paramus Catholic) scored her fourth goal of the season. She connected on the run from the right from 15 yards out, finishing an assist from Nicole Fedorowicz (Virginia Beach/Green Run). Rookie Kayela Gray (Virginia Beach/Salem) capped VWC scoring in the 84th minute ripping in a strong shot from 20 yards out on the right side.
Emory & Henry goalie Sarah Jerome (Charolette, N.C./Myers Park) recorded 12 saves for the Wasps.
Virginia Wesleyan closes the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, hosting Sweet Briar College at 4 p.m. in ODAC play.
