Victory eludes Virginia Wesleyan in another OT contest

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A stellar effort by the Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer team was snuffed out in the final 1:31 at No. 11 Lynchburg College on Tuesday..

The Marlins were less than two minutes away from pinning a loss on the host Hornets when Lynchburg found the break it needed.  Angela Bosco (Huntington Station, N.Y./Huntington) came through with the game-tying score for the Hornets with 1:28 on the clock to prevent the VWC victory and help send the game into overtime.

With 5:52 played in OT, Morgan Singer (Yorktown/Grafton) connected on a header off an assist by Dessi Dupuy (Lynchburg/E.C. Glass) to lift the Hornets to a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) overtime victory.  It was the second one-goal loss in a row for VWC, which dropped a 1-0 decision in double overtime to Washington and Lee University's Generals who scored in the final 31 seconds.

Virginia Wesleyan drops to 6-3-2 overall and to 3-2 in the league. Lynchburg improved to 10-1 overall and to 4-0 in the ODAC.

The Marlins had difficulty sparking a consistent offense against Lynchburg, but took the lead in the second half when Jasmine Dao (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) rocketed the ball into the net from about 45 yards out in the 58th minute.  VWC protected the lead for most of the second half, until Bosco found her opening for the goal that enabled Lynchburg to avoid the loss in regulation play.

Rookie goalie Megan Gerhart (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn)helped the VWC cause with six saves in goal against a Hornets team that outshot the Marlins 18-4.  Lynchburg also posted a 6-1 advantage in corners. Tess Frelick (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) recorded a pair of saves for the Hornets.

Virginia Wesleyan will attempt to snap a two-game losing skid on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they host Bridgewater College at 5 p.m.
