Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After trailing 1-0 at halftime in Wednesday's non-conference women's soccer game at Christopher Newport University, Virginia Wesleyan College's 16th ranked Marlins took charge in the second half to post a 5-1 victory.
Twenty-eight minutes into the second half the score was tied after CNU (1-2) scored an own goal that put Virginia Wesleyan (3-0) on the scoreboard.
After that it was all VWC, led by senior Breanne Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) who scored a pair of goals. She gave the Marlins the lead in the 50th minute, scoring off an assist from senior Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).
Seven minutes later Virginia Wesleyan moved ahead 3-1 when Edelman scored, assisted by sophomore Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville). Only 59 seconds elapsed when the Marlins scored again, in the 58th minute, on Ingargiola's second goal of the game, assisted by senior Christina Fernandes (Tinton Falls, N.J./Tinton Falls).
Virginia Wesleyan capped its scoring in the 70th minute when senior Jenna Riegel (Sinking Spring, Pa./West Lawn Wilson) scored off a corner kick by Lizzy Parr (Columbia, Md./Atholon).
Virginia Wesleyan posted a 17-8 advantage in shots.
The Marlins return to the Captains' field on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 9, in the Captains Classic. VWC will face New Jersey's Richard Stockton College (3-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Ohio's Mt. St. Joseph College (0-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
