Marlins improve to 10-0-1 with road win at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. -- A seven-game shutout streak came to an end Friday for the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team, but the Marlins remained undefeated in their 11th consecutive game.

Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C./Hickory scored for the host Emory & Henry College Wasps in the 89th minute, but it did little to change the outcome of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest as nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan posted a 5-1 victory.

The No. 9/14 Marlins started scoring early when senior Bre Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) tallied 3:04 into the contest. She also scored the Marlins' final goal of the game in the 62nd minute, increasing her season total to a team-leading seven.

Junior Angel Horowitz (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) recorded her first goal of the season in the 17th minute and rookie Kaitlyn Clunan (Virginia Beach/Bayside) gave the Marlins a 3-0 first half lead with her fifth goal of the season scored in the 38th minute.

The Marlins increased their lead to 4-0 just 3:20 into the second half when senior All-AmericanJessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) put the ball into the net off a cross from the left from rookie Kerry Knauss (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson).  It was Edelman's fourth goal of the season.

Ingargiola's second goal of the game capped scoring for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan out-shot Emory & Henry 24-10, including 12-1 in the first half. The Marlins also finished with a 5-3 in corner kicks.

Junior Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and rookies Mackenzie McGurgan (Conway, Pa./Freedom Area) and Catherine Brown (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) all recorded time protecting the VWC goal.  Keil played nearly 68 minutes and had two saves, McGurgan played 14:54 and did not have a save, and Brown played a little more than seven minutes and had one save.

Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) played in goal for the Wasps and finished with 11 saves.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Tuesday, Oct. 2, hosting Salisbury University at 7 p.m.
