Early lead does not hold up as VWC falls on the road to Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's field hockey Marlins took the early lead on Bridgewater College's Eagles on Saturday, but could not make it stick.

After sophomoreTanya Puccio (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) scored in the 18th minute to put the Marlins in front, Bridgewater tied the game in the 25th minute and tacked on three unanswered goals in the second half to post a 4-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for VWC, which fell to 3-5 overall and to 1-1 in the league.  Bridgewate improved to 4-3 and to 1-0 in the ODAC.

Taylor Prillaman (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) scored two goals to lead Bridgewater's Eagles, who also had goals scored by Megan Gould (Fredericksburg/Mountain View) and Kelly Ryan (Chesterfield/Matoaca).

Bridgewater finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots and a 12-9 edge in corners. 

Kirsten Olson (Springfield/Lorton South County) started in goal for VWC and had eight saves.  Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) played the last 11+ minutes and recorded two saves.  Jessica Balsano (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) posted three saves for the Eagles.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Sept. 26, hosting nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University at 7:15 p.m. at the National Training Center.
