14th ranked Marlins shut down Randolph-Macon

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's 14th ranked women's soccer team scored three goals and Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets added another one as the Marlins posted a 4-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference road victory on Thursday.

Virginia Wesleyan recorded two goals in each half as it improved its undefeated record to 7-0-1 and snapped a three-game Randolph-Macon winning streak.  The Jackets (3-2) entered the game out-scoring foes 13-2 in the last three outings.

But, Virginia Wesleyan's defense did not give up much of anything as the Jackets were limited to three shots overall, including just one in the second half.

VWC took the lead in the 25th minute when senior Krista Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Millersville) scored, assisted by senior All-American Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).  The lead increased to 2-0 in the 44th minute on an "own goal" when the R-MC defense knocked the ball into the net.

Sophomore Caitlyn Bishop (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) added the Marlins' third goal, giving the Marlins a 3-0 lead in the 54th minute on a penalty kick.

Senior Jenna Riegel (Sinking Spring, Pa./West Lawn Wilson) capped VWC's scoring with a goal in the 83rd meeting, assisted by Samanthan Sanders (Allentown, Pa./Fleetwood).

VWC outshot R-MC 14-3 on the day and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.  Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and Catherine Brown (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) protected the goal for the Marlins.  Brianna Housekeeper was goalkeeper for R-MC and recorded eight saves.

VWC returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, playing at Washington and Lee University in an ODAC game beginning a 3 p.m.
