Box Score ASHLAND, Va. -- Rachel Gardner scored in the 86th minute Sunday to lift the host Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College to a hard-fought 2-1 double overtime win over Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins.
VWC (3-9, 1-4) pushed the Jackets (5-7, 3-0) to the limit in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference game, but Gardner was able to find the game-winner off an assist from Carrie Jacobs. The victory was the third in a row for R-MC, and fifth in the last six games, while the loss was the fifth in a row for VWC.
The Jackets scored first, just 1:15 into the competition on a shot by Jacobs. But, that was it for the host team as the Virginia Wesleyan defense responded by not allowing anything else during regulation play.
Virginia Wesleyan tied the game in the 46th minute, when Courtney Copeland tallied off an assist from Kelly Mullahy. Regulation competition ended with the 1-1 tie, as did the first overtime, before Gardner produced the winning goal.
R-MC finished with a 22-17 edge in shots and a 14-8 advantage in penalty corners.
Kirsten Olson played in goal for the Marlins and recorded nine saves. Nicole Woodworth finished with 10 saves for R-MC.
The Marlins complete again on Saturday, Oct, 13, at Eastern Mennonite University in an ODAC game beginning at 4 p.m.
